Why should teachers get a bonus for showing up?

I couldn’t believe what I was reading. The News article about the Buffalo School District and teachers’ union contract stated the district was offering bonuses based on teacher attendance. What? They are already receiving a paycheck to do their job. We have to give them an incentive to show up?

The district said it is addressing concerns about teacher absenteeism. We always hear that the teachers are “dedicated” and they want everything for the students. “Dedication” means you show up to do the job you are being paid to do. The taxpayers shouldn’t have to offer the teachers an incentive! Whatever happened to good work ethics?
