YOUNGSTOWN – You can see the dark side of Old Fort Niagara at its seasonal fall fundraiser, Haunted Fortress, from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and again Oct. 22.
The 45-minute tour introduces the public to ghosts from the fort’s illustrious past, a tour of the cemetery, and creepy campfire stories.
Tickets are now available by pre-sale at $20 per person by calling (716) 745-7611 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
“Haunted Fortress scares visitors in new ways each year,” said Robert Emerson, the fort’s executive director. “Even if you are not afraid of the dark, you will be, here.”
Haunted Fortress offers visitors a nocturnal tour of the fort, complete with ghosts from the fort’s violent past. Visitors can also linger by a bonfire and hear stories of unexplained supernatural sightings on the fort grounds. As a finale, volunteers offer tours of the graveyard, which dates to 1755.
The fort is seeking volunteers to help make this year’s event a success. Tour guides, ghosts, makeup artists and guides to illuminate paths are needed. Call 745-7611, ext. 221 to volunteer, or for more information.
The fort is open year-round from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., but the Lighthouse is only open from noon to 3 p.m. today and Monday before it closes for the season.
Upcoming fort events include: French Day on Nov. 5; free admission for veterans and active military on Nov. 11 for Veterans Day; and Castle by Candlelight Dec. 3 and Dec. 10.
