Man being evaluated after standoff ends on Potomac Avenue

A standoff with a suicidal man barricaded for several hours in an apartment in the 400 block of Potomac Avenue ended without incident about 8 p.m. Saturday, Buffalo police said.

Northwest District police responded initially at 4 p.m. and Buffalo SWAT and Crisis Management Team were summoned a short time later. Authorities said the man broke windows in the upper apartment of a 2½-story building, tossed large objects out a window and threatened police. The standoff ended when SWAT officers entered the house and found the man in the attic.

Police are investigating if the man was armed with a knife. He was taken to Erie County Medical Center for evaluation and no charges were lodged.

During the standoff, Potomac was closed between Richmond Avenue and Baynes Street.
