We know there's no homeroom today. But we're up and ready to go.
Get yourself ready for today's #PrepTalkLive action with everything you need to know about the day ahead in high school sports.
1. Football - Medina at Cleveland Hill, 2 p.m.
Saturday's premier matchup is undoubtedly this nonleaguer between the No. 2 small school Mustangs (5-0) and No. 6 Eagles (4-1).
Medina's identity lies with its explosive offense, led by running back Jake Cotter (641 rushing yards, 6 total TDs) and versatile playmaker Jalin Cooper (779 all-purpose yards, 10 total TDs). Its 236 points scored trails only Canisius' 245 for most in Western New York through five weeks.
As good as Medina's offense has been, Cleve Hill's defense is just as impressive. The Eagles have yielded a WNY-low 30 points so far this season. Senior Matt Eldridge, who's also a part of an impressive quartet of running backs, heads the defensive effort from his linebacker spot. Aaron Wahler (693 yards, 11 TDs), Dejon Wardlaw (243 yards, 3 TDs) and D'Mario Grant (219 yards, 1 TD round out the backfield with Eldridge (444 yards, 6 TDs). Wahler, Grant and Eldridge each average at least 11.5 yards per carry.
Runner-up for this spot is the aforementioned Crusaders (5-0). The No. 1 large school will be in Ohio for a 2 p.m. game with Cardinal Mooney (4-1). Preview more of Saturday's football games.
2. Boys soccer: Williamsville North at Clarence, noon
This is about as good as it gets in boys soccer. No. 1 large school Will North (12-0-2, 9-0-1) at No. 3 Clarence (11-1-1, 8-1-1) in a battle for ECIC I supremacy. The Spartans handed the Red Devils its lone loss on Sept. 15, a 1-0 outcome. Both of these teams have only given up three goals on the season.
3. Girls soccer: Akron at Newfane, 10 a.m.
No. 5 small school Akron (8-4, 7-3) heads to No. 2 Newfane (9-2, 9-1) for a marquee Niagara-Orleans League matchup between the top to teams in the division. The Panthers won the first meeting, 4-1, at Akron. Now Emily Foltz (12 goals, 6 assists) and Newfane play host to Akron and Kara Seguin (14 goals, 8 assists).
4. Volleyball tournaments
Frontier girls volleyball will host some of the top teams in the area at its tournament played at the Buffalo Niagara Court Center in West Seneca. No. 1 small school St. Mary's of Lancaster will be in New Jersey this weekend for the Garden State Tournament.
On the boys side, the top two teams, Canisius and Eden, will head out to Rochester for the Penfield Tournament. No. 5 Lockport is also hosting a tournament.
5. Boys soccer: Orchard Park at Lancaster, 10 a.m.
No. 8 large school Lancaster (9-3-2, 5-3-2) hosts Orchard Park (8-3-2, 6-3-1), which beat the Legends, 2-0, on Sept. 15. That box score shows that the game was even right up until the very end, when the Quakers didn't score until the 72nd and 76th minutes. Lancaster is coming off two ties with Will North and Clarence. Those might seem like wins to most teams in WNY.
- Boys soccer: Lackawanna at Tonawanda, 10 a.m.
- Boys soccer: Southwestern at Dunkirk, 11 a.m.
- Girls soccer: Pioneer at East Aurora, 10 a.m.
