Dr. Robert M. Barone of Orchard Park, a longtime general surgeon, died Thursday in Hospice Buffalo, Cheektowaga, after a lengthy illness. He was 81.
A Buffalo native, Dr. Barone was a graduate of Canisius High School and Canisius College and earned his medical degree from SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse. He completed an internship and residency at Millard Fillmore Hospital and practiced both there and at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, retiring in 2008. After retiring, he worked for a year at the Gates Wound Care Clinic.
Dr. Barone also was an assistant clinical professor at the University at Buffalo and president of the Millard Fillmore medical staff during the 1990s. He was a member of the Erie County Medical Society and chairman of its Peer Review Committee. He also was a member of Buffalo Surgical Society and the former Science, Progress and Research (SPR), an organization of local medical professionals. He was an inactive member of the National Guard.
An active golfer, tennis player and skier, Dr. Barone was a member of the Orchard Park Country Club and Worthington Country Club in Bonita Springs, Fla., where he was a seasonal resident. He also founded the ROMEOs (Retired Old Men Eating Out) social organization in 2009.
A world traveler, he also enjoyed fishing.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, the former Shirley Fruth; two daughters, Susan Meyer and Kathleen Honer; two sons, Robert and Dr. Steven; and six grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at noon Tuesday in Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church, 26 Thorn Ave., Orchard Park.
