Buffalo schools get $2 million grant to help kids get fit and healthy

The Buffalo Public Schools have been awarded a $2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to start a new physical activity and nutrition program.

The first two years of “Get Fit – Get Healthy Buffalo” will focus on educating teachers and staff, providing more physical education equipment in the schools and offering more opportunities for physical activity and nutrition education. The third year will see the construction of a ropes course facility.

The funding comes from the 2016 Carol M. White Physical Education Program. The Buffalo schools were among 16 recipients of the grants out of 350 applicants nationwide.

“This grant will expand the district’s work in increasing student and parent physical activity and nutritional knowledge,” School Superintendent Kriner Cash says. “Each of these is extremely important and will better position our students for academic success.”
