A special lounge for military personnel, veterans and their families officially opened this week at Buffalo Niagara International Airport.
The WNY Freedom Lounge, located on the lower level of the passenger terminal on the east side of the baggage claim area, provides snacks, beverages, telephone and internet access, and a private gathering place to await flights. It is staffed by veterans, veteran organizations and military supporters.
The lounge is comprised of three rooms – a reception area, a kitchenette and a small living room with sofas and chairs. A non-profit group headed by retired Army Lt. Col. Dan Walther of Kenmore raised funds and made arrangements for the lounge.
“It’s projected to be open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. as long as volunteers are available,” Walther said. If volunteers are not on duty, he added, “People can also check with the information desk. Many of the airport ambassadors will provide access.”
Donations to support the operation of the lounge can be made online at freedomlounge.nickelcity.net, via the WNY Freedom Lounge page on Facebook or by mail to WNY Freedom Lounge, 4200 Genesee St., Cheektowaga, NY 14225.
