Ryan Ciminelli of Cheektowaga jumped from fifth place to the No. 1 position for the stepladder finals with a 244 game, then held off J.R. Raymond of Bay City, Mich., 232-221, to win the PBA Extra Frame Parkside Lanes Open and $10,000 on Sunday in Aurora, Ill.
Ciminelli made it to the stepladder on his 20th game.
“I was never on the show the entire tournament,” Ciminelli said, “but I’ve been working on my perseverance and it worked. I kind of felt like I was on a slide coming into the tournament after a couple of recent second-place finishes, so this one is pretty special.”
Raymond struck on five of his first six shots on the final match, but Raymond, trying for his first PBA Tour title, made a ball change and threw five strikes in a row to get back into the match. Needing three strikes in the 10th to tie Ciminelli, he left the 6-10 on his second try.
Raymond defeated to the final with a 207-193 win over Kristopher Prather of Milton, Fla. after Prather had eliminated Hall of Famer Walter Ray Williams, 224-191.
It was the seventh career title on the PBA Tour for Ciminelli, second this season.
