BERNER, Marilyn Upp
BERNER - Marilyn Upp Marilyn Upp Berner died peacefully at her Sarasota home with her family by her side. She was 95, and led a fulfilling and active life. Born in Chicago, Illinois, attended Duke and graduated from Tufts University. Loving wife of Guy P. Berner, who predeceased her in April 2016; they would have celebrated 75 years of marriage this month. Mother of Karen and Ben Little, Jan and Frank Beurskens, Gary and Judy Berner, and Laurel and George Harvey. Marilyn and Guy raised their family in Buffalo NY, with magical summers at the family lakefront home in Angola, NY, and later moved to Venice, Florida. Marilyn and Guy loved to travel, saw much of the world, often with children and grandchildren in tow. Marilyn was the ruler of her kitchen and her desk. She loved being an efficient and effective organizer of all things - meals, her files, her home, and even her children and grandchildren. Never one to complain, her mantra, "It is what it is" defines her spirit and temperament. As an only child, Marilyn knew the importance of making friends and nurturing friendships wherever she lived. She kept tabs through her meticulous Christmas card list, and took pride in her photographs of her growing brood of 11 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. She was one of the first Mac computer users, mastering Excel, Word, Skype, and downloading stock prices off the Internet. She gave back to others, through volunteer activities as diverse as Girl Scouts, teaching Sunday School, Meals on Wheels and serving on the Board of the Plantation Golf and Country Club Community Foundation, and was a sought after speaker in Buffalo for her book reviews of current fiction and non-fiction. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her name can be made to The Plantation Community Foundation or Cradle Beach Camp. There will be no services, but the family will host a gathering of friends at Glenridge later this year.
