Alabama man arrested in continuing probe into rash of battery thefts

BATAVIA – An Alabama man has been arrested in the continuing investigation into a rash of battery thefts from commercial vehicles, the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office announced Friday.

Bart A. Towne, 48, was taken into custody near his home Thursday as the first suspect in the probe, authorities said. He is charged with third-=degree grand larceny in the thefts of more than $3,000 in batteries from a Dodgeson Road business in Alexander, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Arraigned in Alexander Town Court, Towne was remanded to the Genesee County Jail, Batavia, without bail.

Sheriff Gary T. Maha said the thefts of the batteries – used in large trucks, buses and heavy equipment – occurred in the towns of Elba, Oakfield, Batavia, Byron and Alabama. State Police also investigated.

Anyone with information about the thefts is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at (585) 345-5000.
