John Szczerbinski of North Tonawanda won two stepladder matches before losing in the semifinals to the eventual champion of the PBA Fall Swing Bear Open at Thunder Bowl Lanes in Allen Park, Mich. The tournament finals were shown on the CBS Sports Network Wednesday night, but were actually bowled earlier this month.
Szczerbinski, the No. 4 qualifier, defeated No. 5 Jon Van Hees of Charlestown, R.I., 207-183 in the first match. Szczerbinski then took out No. 3 Josh Blanchard of Mesa, Ariz., 232-184. His quest for his first PBA Tour title ended with a loss to E.J. Tackett of Huntington, Ind., 193-183.
Tackett went on to defeat No. 1 seed Jesper Svensson of Sweden, 212-199, in the championship match to capture the $10,000 top prize. Szczerbinski’s third-place finish was worth $40,000.
Brad Angelo of Lockport was 12th and Ryan Ciminelli of Cheektowaga 65th in the tournament.
