High School Roundup: South Park makes statement with win over Bennett

The defending state champions are still the team to beat in Class A South.

The South Park Sparks delivered that message resoundingly Saturday afternoon at All High Stadium as they posted their third straight shutout – blanking two-time Section VI finalist Bennett, 16-0, behind a fine all-around performance from Nick Schaefer and company.

Schaefer led the defensive effort with eight tackles, including two for losses; averaged 45 yards punting and completed 11 of 16 passes for 161 yards and a touchdown. South Park remained unbeaten in the division and posted its 21st straight win against a Class A-sized public school.

“We played excellent, we played very well as a defense, we executed very well,” Sparks coach Tim Delaney said. “Bennett is a good football team but we played fast and physical and we made a few more plays than they did.”

Schafer tossed a 28-yard touchdown pass to Dylan Lang late in the first quarter and the Sparks (3-1, 3-0) added another score via halfback-option pass with just over five minutes left in the third as Khalil White hooked up with Devonte Fountain on the 11-yard touchdown.
