Four in custody for assault on man near downtown library

The 64-year-old man assaulted by four teenaged boys near the main library at Broadway and Ellicott Street early Thursday morning remained in critical condition at the Erie County Medical Center Thursday night, according to Michael J. DeGeorge, spokesman for the Buffalo Police Department. All four suspects, one 17, one 16 and two juveniles, are all in custody and charged with both first-degree assault and gang assault, DeGeorge said. The four attacked the victim about 5:40 a.m. Thursday. Police officials closed off Ellicott Street from Broadway to Clinton for several hours before Thursday morning rush hour traffic mandated the reopening of those streets.
