BAKER, John Fredrick

BAKER - John Fredrick Of Ashtabula, OH, 86, died September 17, 2016. He was born February 23, 1930 in Lackawanna, NY, the son of Nelson M. and Sadie (McKenney) Baker. A 1948 graduate of Our Lady of Victory High School in Lackawanna, NY, he served his country as a Staff Sargent in the Air Force during the Korean War. He worked at Bethlehem Steel Company, ACF Industries, Union Carbide, and then Elkem Metals until his retirement in December of 1994 after 36 years of service. He enjoyed his family, Cleveland Indians and Browns, and sports of all kinds as well as traveling on vacation cruises. He was one of the founding members of the Lackawanna Hilltopper Club and held many of the leadership roles over his membership of 57 years. His survivors include his wife of 62 years, Marilyn (Osbeck), whom he married May 22, 1954 in Hamburg, NY; three children, Linda (Rick) Coblitz of Ashtabula, Robert Nelson Baker of Pueblo, CO, and John R. (Ann) Baker of Missoula, MO; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Olive Igoe and Margaret DiMarti; six brothers, Philip and Richard DuFrane and Louis, Francis, Joseph, and Andrew Baker; his parents; and his special great-uncle, Venerable Msgr. Nelson Baker, who began the Homes of Charity and led the construction of Our Lady of Victory Basilica in Lackawanna. Visiting hours will be from 9:30-11 AM with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11 AM on Thursday, September 22, 2016 at Our Lady of Peace, 3330 Lake Ave., Ashtabula. Entombment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Contributions may be made to Our Lady of Victory Homes of Charity, 767 Ridge Rd., Lackawanna, NY 14218.
