Gene A. Rondina Sr., Scott Aviation retiree, former trooper, Ripa’s bartender

March 28, 1927 – Sept. 17, 2016

Gene A. Rondina Sr., of Cheektowaga, a Scott Aviation retiree and former state trooper, died Saturday in Harris Hill Nursing Facility, Lancaster, after a short illness. He was 89.

Born in Depew, he was a graduate of Depew High School and served in the Navy aboard the USS Midway in the late 1940s.

Mr. Rondina was an officer in the State Police for two years, stationed in Allegany at a time when troopers lived in the barracks.

He then took a job with Scott Aviation, where he worked for 34 years. He was a lead man when he retired in 1992.

A longtime Depew resident, he also was a bartender for more than 20 years at Ripa’s Restaurant in Lancaster.

He was a member of Our Lady of Pompeii Catholic Church.

A musician, he played the piano in bands in his youth.

His wife of 58 years, the former Caroline A. Baumeister, died in 2012.

Survivors include three sons, James J., Gene A. Jr. and Thomas; two brothers, Robert and Edward; and three grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in Our Lady of Pompeii Church, 158 Laverack Ave., Lancaster.
