Red Jacket park to be closed through next summer for shoreline, habitat restoration

Red Jacket Riverfront Natural Habitat Park will be closed to the public beginning Monday for the restoration of shoreline and habitat. The passive-use park at the foot of Smith Street, a popular fishing, kayaking and hiking destination, will be closed through next summer, according to the Erie County departments of Parks, Recreation and Forestry and Environment and Planning.

Planned upgrades include trails, an informal kayak launch, enhanced green infrastructure parking area and a living fence line around the park perimeter to deter invasive species from neighboring properties. The county received $1.9 million as part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Great Lakes Restoration Initiative to upgrade both Red Jacket and the Bailey Peninsula Natural Habitat Park.
