After starting nearly 10 years ago serving about 30 families in an extra room at a church, the Eden North Collins Food Pantry is dedicating its new building at 11 a.m. Saturday in North Collins.
The 4,300 square-foot building at 2059 Franklin St. in the Village of North Collins gives the food pantry the ability to distribute food to needy families every Wednesday afternoon, instead of twice a month. About 130 families now receive food from the pantry.
The John R. Oishei Foundation awarded a $40,000 grant to the food pantry to help with the construction of the $400,000 building. The land was donated by Jim Smith, CEO of American Wire Tie in North Collins.
The Rev. Walter Grabowski, pastor of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in North Collins, where the pantry had been located, will bless the new structure.
The food pantry started in 2007 as an offshoot of Operation Good Neighbor in Evans, and became the Eden North Collins Food Pantry the following year, serving Eden, North Collins, Collins, Collins Center and Lawtons.
