Big Tree Road, also called Route 20A, is closed Friday morning from Center Drive to Cobham Dive because an intoxicated driver’s vehicle struck a utility pole overnight, according to Orchard Park Police.
NYSEG is repairing the pole to restore power to affected customers. About 300 customers in Erie County were without power as of 9 a.m., according to NYSEG.
Police said they did not know how long the road would be closed.
Police urged motorist to use caution if they approach an intersection with the traffic light not functioning, and treat it as a four-way stop.
The pole was hit at 2:53 a.m., according to police, and officers found a 2011 dodge ram with major damage, including a deployed airbag, being driven six minutes later on Thorn Avenue about a half mile from the scene. After a short time, Anthony Peters, 21, of Orchard Park, stopped the vehicle and was subsequently charged with driving While intoxicated, possession of an open container of alcohol in a moving vehicle, and numerous other traffic infractions, police said.
Peters was held for arraignment Friday in Orchard Park Town Court.
