Chlorine leak triggers North Tonawanda advisory

NORTH TONAWANDA – A minor chlorine leak at the North Tonawanda wastewater treatment plant at 830 River Road about 10:20 p.m. Tuesday led to the closing of roads around the plant and residents were advised to keep their windows closed.

North Tonawanda firefighters and police secured the scene, along with the Niagara County Sheriff’s Hazmat Team.

Plant Superintendant Bill Davignow told The Buffalo News late Tuesday that the “very minor” leak from a cylinder triggered the alarm system. The problem was quickly resolved and no chlorine leaked into the community, he said.

North Tonawanda officials urged residents to keep windows closed until well into the morning. Fire, police and Hazmat crews were expected to remain at the scene into Wednesday.
