Jeanette R. Deneen, active in Gowanda civic affairs

Jeanette R. Deneen, who was active in civic affairs, died Sept. 6 in her Gowanda home. She was 90.

Born a twin in Buffalo, the former Jeanette Rogers was a graduate of Griffith Institute High School in Springville. She worked as a switchboard operator in Gowanda for New York Telephone Co. from 1944 to 1947, when she married co-worker Charles R. “Doc” Deneen.

The mother of four was active in her husband’s political career, helping him in successful election campaigns for the Gowanda Village Board, Town of Persia supervisor and the Cattaraugus County Legislature, where he was a charter member.

Mrs. Deneen also was instrumental in the development and construction of Chang-Hu Park in Gowanda and was active in the maintenance of the Main Street Flower Project in Gowanda.

An avid fisherman and nature enthusiast, she maintained a summer home in Canada. She enjoyed watercolor painting, china painting, knitting, sewing, and restoring furniture.

Her husband died in 2004.

Survivors include a son, Thomas; three daughters, Sharon Potmesil, Margaret Gunsolus and Cathleen Holt; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Schindler Funeral Home, 44 Center St., Gowanda, after visitation at 11 a.m.
