Federal grant of $346,510 announced for Akron Airport

Akron Airport, operated by the Christian Airmen’s Fellowship, has been awarded $346,510 in federal funding for infrastructure improvements.

The small, privately run airport will use the funding to purchase nearly 3½ acres of land for future development, install a runway vertical/visual guidance system and upgrade its runway lighting.

Although privately owned, the airport is federally designated as a reliever airport and, under Federal Aviation Administration rules, is eligible for federal funding, according to a spokeswoman for Sens. Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, Both D-N.Y., who announced the funding Tuesday.
