Healthy choices: Hike, bike, run and play in bubbles in WNY this week

Hiking, biking and running will hit their stride in the coming days, as the Top 10 WNY Refresh Picks of the Week attest.

Here are the top recommendations when it comes to health, fitness, nutrition and family events in the region.


Slow Roll: Riders gather at 5:30 p.m. and ride starts at 6:30 sharp outside Big Ditch Brewing Co., 55 E. Huron St. Bikers up to age 18 must be accompanied by an adult. For more info, visit

Scrub Run: 5K to support the Mercy Hospital Foundation and the hospital’s Heart Center, 6:30 p.m., Cazenovia Park, 25 Cazenovia St., South Buffalo Check-in and registration begins at 4 p.m. in the Casino Building. Register online at $22 by Monday and $25 after that and on race day.


Plant and Animal Spirit Medicine: Learn more about the Native American medical path during an evening with Algonquin Elder John Volpe, 5 p.m., Spirit Way Project, 21 S. Grove St., Aurora. For more info, visit $15.

Exploring Mindfulness: Six-week class starts at 6 p.m., Complete Wellness Arts and Science Center, 1515 Kensington Ave. Learn about the health benefits of and how to practice Mindfulness. For more info, visit $120 for entire course.

Tour De Farms: Classic 35-mile tour starts at 9 a.m., Rich’s Products parking lot, Niagara Street; urban 16-mile tour at 10:30 a.m., Massachusetts Avenue Project (MAP) urban farm, 389 Massachusetts Ave. Hosted by GObike Buffalo and the Massachusetts Avenue Project (MAP), sponsored by Independent Health and The Buffalo News. Health Fair: 10 a.m., Delaware Baptist Church, 965 Delaware Ave. Includes health information, free health screenings, refreshments and gifts.

Bubblefest: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Buffalo Museum of Science, 1020 Humboldt Parkway. Bubble crafts, a bubble performance, a Tekno Bubble Dance Room and Bubble-Beard Photo Booth will be part of the fun. Bubblemania performances by Doug Rougeux at 10:30 and 11:30 a.m., and 1, 2 and 3 p.m. Admission to Bubblemania performances is $3 for members and $5 for non-members; other activities are included in regular museum admission charges. Walk Towards a New Horizon: On-site registration at 8:30 a.m., wellness walk starts at 10, Delaware Park Ring Road, near Colvin and Amherst streets. Hope for individuals suffering from substance use and/or mental health disorders. Register online at $25 includes a T-shirt.
