Elizabeth S. “Betty” Hughes, of the Town of Tonawanda, a retired elementary school teacher, died Thursday in Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, Amherst. She was 93.
Born in Buffalo, the former Elizabeth Scofield grew up in the Humboldt Park neighborhood and was a graduate of Bennett High School. She earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Buffalo State Teachers College in 1945.
Mrs. Hughes was a second-grade teacher from 1945 until she retired in the early 1980s. She was honored as a North Tonawanda Teacher of the Year.
A longtime member of the Kenmore Mercy Hospital Auxiliary, she also was a member of the Church of the Nativity, the YWCA, the Red Hat Society and the Buffalo State College teaching sorority, Delta Sigma Epsilon.
Her husband, Matthew J. “Bud,” died in 1982.
Survivors include many nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at noon Tuesday in the Church of the Nativity, 1530 Colvin Blvd., Town of Tonawanda.
