Brother Jude Thaddeus Holzfoerster, former provincial and local superior of the Brothers of Mercy, died Friday in Brothers of Mercy Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Clarence, after a short illness. He was 81.
Born in Covington, Ky., he entered the Brothers of Mercy of Montabaur on Feb. 22, 1952, and professed perpetual vows on Sept. 8, 1960.
His religious life consisted of various assignments, particularly in the administration of the religious community. He was superior of the Brothers’ former nursing home in Kansas City, Mo., from 1961 to 1964, superior of the Brothers’ former house on Jewett Parkway in Buffalo from 1965 to 1967, assistant general superior from 1967 to 1973, assistant provincial superior from 1973 to 1979 and provincial/regional superior from 1991 to 2016.
Brother Jude also was instrumental in the merger of the Brothers of Mercy of Montabaur in Clarence with the Brothers of Mercy of Mary Help of Christians in Trier, Germany. The merger of the two religious communities took place on Sept. 1.
In addition to his quick wit and humor, Brother Jude was known as a man of compassion and generosity to those in need.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Thursday in the Sacred Heart Home Chapel of the Brothers of Mercy, 4520 Ransom Road, Clarence.
