Severe thunderstorms cause scattered power outages

Severe thunderstorms Saturday night knocked out power to about 1,300 homes in Erie County and another 560 in Niagara County, accompanied by driving rain and wind gusts that dominated parts of South Buffalo and Lovejoy, stretching northward to the City of Lockport and northern Niagara County, according to utility company reports.

As of 9:30 p.m., National Grid reported 981 customers were without power in Erie County and expected to have power restored in a few hours. Another 181 customers in Cattaraugus and 139 in Chautauqua counties also were without power.

In Niagara County, New York State Electric & Gas was working to restore power to 564 customers.

Strong thunderstorm activity and high winds were reported in the Buffalo Niagara region, with some trees downed or branches snapping and downing wires.

In Lockport, power problems were centered in the north end of the city, police said.

Buffalo firefighters responded to some reports of downed trees and wires, primarily in South Buffalo.
