Lancaster figured to have a big test Friday night when it played at Jamestown. The Legends passed that test with flying colors.
Lancaster set a record for points in a game by taking a 56-14 decision over the Red Raiders. The two teams figured to be in the scramble for playoff positions in Class AA North.
Ryan Mansell set the tone with a 47-yard touchdown pass to Max Giordano in the first quarter. Zack Samborski followed with a 29-yard scoring run, and the Legends never looked back.
Elsewhere, Frontier had a nice comeback in the final minutes to beat Springville, 20-19. Dylan Kimtch hit Chris Smith with a 12-yard touchdown pass with 13 seconds to go to lift the Falcons to the win. Ian Baker ran for 174 yards and three touchdowns for the Griffins.
The box score of the night was supplied by Pioneer’s 50-43 win over East Aurora/Holland in Class B South. A total of 30 points were scored in the second quarter, only to see that topped by the third quarter’s 40 points. “The craziest third quarter I’ve been a part of in my 23 years as coach,” Jim Duprey of the winners said.
Todd Thompson had 35 carries for 253 yards and four touchdowns for the Panthers. He also returned a kick for a score and had three two-point conversions. Caleb Riordan had 20 carries for 108 yards. Mike Rigerman made 10 tackles for Pioneer, and forced a fumble.
For East Aurora/Holland, Jacey Jakubczak returned three kicks for touchdowns.
Class AA South
Orchard Park 38, Hutch-Tech 6: Dillon Jenca threw for three touchdowns and ran for a fourth as the Quakers gave up the first score to the Engineers and then rolled. Jenca was 15 of 25 for 266 yards. Josh Dahl ran for 90 yards and caught four passes.
Class A North
Grand Island 28, Amherst 14: The Vikings trailed at the half, but scored 16 points in the third quarter to pull away. Jim Thorpe of GI picked up 201 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries, while JB Wilkes had 13 tackles.
North Tonawanda 22, Williamsville South 6: Joe Dotterweich led the Lumberjacks with 175 yards on 30 carries for a touchdown, while linebacker Zach Woodard added nine tackles.
Class A South
West Seneca East 50, Lake Shore 8: West Seneca East spotted Lake Shore an 8-6 lead in the first quarter, and then rolled to an easy victory. Jacob Maurino had 133 yards rushing and two touchdowns on only 11 carries. Twin brother Jared Maurino ran the opening kickoff back 80 yards for a Trojans’ touchdown. Ian Dolac added eight tackles for West Seneca East, which improved to 1-1.
Iroquois 43, Riverside 0: Brandon Yax carried the ball 16 times for 154 yards and four touchdowns for the Chiefs, who dominated the game. Meanwhile, Connor Day picked off two passes, Mike Emer had seven tackles and a sack, and Mike King added an interception. Iroquois forced four turnovers in its victory.
South Park 38, Hamburg 0: The Sparks, defending state champions, got back to their winning ways after their loss last week to St. Joe’s. South Park has won 19 straight games in its division. It ran for 371 yards on 36 carries; Shakur Harris had 135 of them and ran for two scores.
Class B East
Alden 28, Albion 18: Christian Snell ran for 125 yards and scored two touchdowns as the Bulldogs used a 21-point second quarter to beat the Purple Eagles.
Medina 48, Lackawanna 6: It was all Mustangs. Medina jumped out to a 34-0 lead at the half. The winners used some big plays in the game. Lucas Porter had a 50-yard interception return for a score, while Ronnie Koonce rumbled 95 yards for a touchdown after recovering a fumble. Jalin Cooper led Medina with 83 yards rushing, while Dawson Joy had eight tackles and forced a fumble on defense.
Class B South
Olean 20, Dunkirk 14: Garrett Boldt hit Derek Dandrea with a 24-yard scoring pass in the fourth quarter to lift the Huskies to the win. Dylan Vincent ran for two touchdowns, including a 70-yard jaunt.
Class B West
Cheektowaga 65, Tonawanda 8: The Warriors rolled to a victory on the arm of Eric Bartnik, who was 15 for 25 for 260 yards, and the legs of Michael Gray, who ran for 170 yards.
Class C South
Southwestern 23, Allegany-Limestone 0: The Trojans improved to 2-0 with the easy win.
Maple Grove 51, Frewsburg 14: The Red Dragons have gotten off to a great start after moving to Class D this season. Maple Grove coach Curt Fischer picked up his 200th career victory.
Randolph 19, Portville 13 (OT): Jake Beaver threw 20 yards to Dylan Williams for an overtime score as the Cardinals hung on against a pesky Panther squad. Beaver completed a total of 14 passes for 208 yards, and a second touchdown.
Franklinville/Ellicottville 55, Cattaraugus/Little Valley 0: Brock Blecha threw two touchdowns in the first quarter to help the Titans get off to a 28-0 lead.
Maryvale 34, Depew 7: The Flyers stuck to the ground game, piling up 415 yards on 44 carries. Rashad Law earned 180 of them on 10 carries, including an 82-yard run. Dylan Casey picked up 100 yards rushing in nine carries.
Williamsville East 40, Lewiston-Porter 22: TJ Allen of the Flames ran for 242 yards; Drew Butler caught four catches for 78 yards and a touchdown.
Bishop Kearney-V 27, Nichols 0: The game was called after three quarters after the lights at the Rochester-area school failed.
Central Catholic (Ohio) 49, Bishop Timon/St. Jude 0: The Tigers fell to 0-2 with the loss to the out-of-state opponent.
University Prep-V 42, Salamanca 8: Jacob Dekay scored the Warriors’ only touchdown on a fumble recovery in the end zone.
