State police warn about phone scams

ALBANY – State Police are warning the public about telephone scammers who will pretend that a “loved one” has been in an auto accident or been kidnapped and demand money to help them. Authorities recommended that anyone who receives such a threatening telephone call, which usually involves a demand that money be sent to a specific location outside of the United States to prevent a loved one from being arrested or harmed – to immediately report the call to their local police agency. Such scammers often target the elderly and will call in the middle of the night when people may be asleep.
