Buffalo woman dies in one-vehicle crash on Grand Island

A Buffalo woman died Thursday night when her car drifted off the southbound Niagara Thruway and hit a tree on Grand Island, according to State Police.

Kimberly J. Perkins, 50, may have suffered a medical condition because witnesses said her car slowly eased off the highway, struck a fence and ended up in a backyard of a Staley Road home, according to the Thruway office of the State Police.

The incident took place at about 8 p.m. when Perkins’ 2005 Ford Explorer left the highway between the Whitehaven Road and Beaver Island State Park exits.

She was taken to Kenmore Mercy Hopsital, where she died, according to the state police.

State Police had an accident reconstruction crew working near the crash site late Thursday evening.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
