A substance believed to be hydraulic fluid or oil is leaking over the streets of the East Side, leaving some spots slick and dangerous to navigate, Buffalo Fire Department dispatchers reported.
The cause and the point of origin of the leak could not be immediately determined.
And area near Fillmore and Delavan avenues appeared to be saturated with the substance.
Police were called to the scene to direct traffic at several locations, dispatchers said.
At Buffalo Fire Headquarters downtown, workers loaded more than 100 bags of kitty litter to be delivered to the scene to soak up the substance, said fire dispatchers.
The state Department of Environmental Conservation was also called in to help.
“We don’t have enough kitty litter in the city to handle this,” said one firefighter in a radio transmission. “It extends for miles and it looks like it was here for days.”
