This nation was built upon diversity Republicans reject

Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas, Laurie Hernandez, Madison Kocian and Simone Biles not only won gold medals, but represented what Americans like to claim as “our” core values of hard work and self-determination. They also represent the real America, a multi-cultural mix of race, ethnicity and religion.

There never was an America where everyone is white, of European stock and Christian. The one that Republicans have vaguely alluded to restoring for years. The one that Donald Trump unashamedly promotes has never existed.

If only we could erase “For English, press one, para Español, marque número dos,” from our phone menus, build a big wall, send migrants back after they pick our fruit, keep African- and Muslim-Americans in their own neighborhoods and never hear foreigners speak their native tongues in our Walmarts, then we could “take our country back.” Guess what … it’s everyone’s country now.

So, if you shared in the glory of the Team USA women’s gymnastics team and got choked up when the anthem played, take a good look at the names and diverse faces of the young women who brought you that moment of pride with their hard work and sacrifice.
