Baseball-bat attack leaves one person unconscious during big Black Rock fight

A crowded fight scene, including two men waving guns, led to a serious baseball-bat assault that left one person unconscious in the Black Rock neighborhood early Tuesday morning, Northwest District police reported.

Police officers responded to the fight call at 12:20 a.m. at the corner of Thompson and Hamilton streets, just north of Amherst Street, where they had to disperse 50 to 60 people from the area.

That’s when officers found a person lying unconscious in the street. A witness told police the victim had been struck in the back of the head. The witness also told police about having been hit in the ribs while trying to shield the first victim from further attack. The original victim later regained consciousness but was unable to speak and was moved to the Intensive Care Unit in Erie County Medical Center.

At the hospital, a witness who knows the victim told investigating police officers that the attackers were college students who got out of a car holding baseball bats before attacking the victim, according to the police report.
