Letter: The national anthem reflects America’s pride

The national anthem reflects America’s pride

While watching the Olympics over the past two weeks I was struck by how many of our athletes were brought to tears on the podium during the playing of our national anthem. Then there was the pole vaulter who stopped in mid competition and stood at attention while it was playing.

Recently there have been suggestions that we change the current anthem because it is hard to sing or speaks too much of war and violence. I believe it is a strong, emotional and moving piece of music that reminds us of how hard our ancestors had to fight for the freedom that we enjoy today.

If you do not believe this, just ask the athletes. “The Star-Spangled Banner,” may it always fly over our country and forever be our national anthem.
