Clarence, Joes win tourney openers
The host Clarence Red Devils and St. Joe’s scored impressive opening round victories in the Clarence Tournament Wednesday.
Ross Showalter scored a goal in each half and Cam Law had a pair of assists for Clarence in its 4-0 win over Nichols. Chris O’Brien got Clarence started with a goal in the fourth minute. Sam Sutherland had the other goal for Clarence, which had a 14-3 shots advantage.
Tom Stankowski scored twice as St. Joe’s edged Buffalo Public Schools power International Prep at Grover, 3-2. Ahmed Hassoon and Abdulahi Husssein scored for I-Prep. Pa Lu assisted on both.
While I-Prep was busy in the tournament, other Buffalo schools opened D’Youville Cup league play.
Dylan Herstek scored in the 61st and 66th minutes to lead City Honors over Olmsted, 3-0. Nurul Akib had the other Honors goal while Leo Biehl had a pair of assists. Kabura Elias had three goals and four assists and Roshanally Hamza scored three and assisted on two others for Burgard in a 9-0 rout of da Vinci.
Crean’s goal wins for OP girls
Orchard Park failed to score in any of its three losses to Lancaster last season. Wednesday, the Quakers finally broke through. Sophomore Jenna Crean scored in the second overtime to give coach Mike Graffeo’s team a 1-0 victory over the Legends in an early-season ECIC I girls soccer showdown. Senior Aryana Dreyer got the assist when she attacked and her shot deflected to Crean, who scored only her second varsity goal. Alyssa Lutz made five saves for Orchard Park.
In ECIC III, Rachel Foote had two goals and an assist and Erin Byers scored twice for Pioneer in a 6-0 win over Depew. Starpoint’s Kristen Prohaska had a hand in five goals (2 goals, 3 assists ) and Elizabeth Bradley scored twice in an 8-0 romp Lake Shore.
