Fire on Potomac Avenue leaves 11 needing shelter

Firefighters battled a two-alarm fire on Potomac Avenue that burned out of control for nearly 40 minutes.

The fire broke out shortly before 4 p.m. at a one-story frame dwelling at 80 Potomac and spread to a second adjoining two-story structure at 1246 West Ave., reported Buffalo Fire Department dispatchers.

Within minutes, flames were breaking through the roof, as fire worked its way up through the house.

Firefighters searched the first and second floors for possible victims but did not find any. A cat or dog may still be inside, dispatchers reported at one point.

After the fire was pronounced under control, the Red Cross was called to help eight adults, three children and one cat.
