Coast Guard urges people to use caution Labor Day weekend

Officials of Coast Guard Sector Buffalo, citing a high number of emergency cases so far this year, urged boaters and others on the water to take safety precautions over the Labor Day holiday weekend.

They cautioned everyone on the water to use a life jacket, noting that all of the drowning victims on Lake Erie and Lake Ontario this year were not wearing them.

They also advised those on the water to drink alcoholic beverages in moderation and to steer clear of larger vessels and busy waterways.

Coast Guard Sector Buffalo reported that it responded to more than 150 emergency calls in Lake Erie, Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence Seaway in August, saving 20 lives. Three lives were lost.

Anyone in distress on the water should call the Coast Guard at 843-9527.
