Buffalo man accused of teaching teen son to break into campers, police say

A Buffalo man taught his 15-year-old son to steal at a campground in Allegany County, state police say.

William L. Smith, 36, was taken into custody Sunday after the owner of the campground in Scio, near Wellsville, reported to police that she had seen two men matching Smith and his son’s description breaking into vacant campers.

Smith took his son for a walk around the campground and broke into vacant campers until they were confronted by the campground owner, state troopers said.

Smith, who faces charges of trespassing, criminal mischief and endangering the welfare of a child, was arraigned in Scio Town Court, where his bail was set at $5,000. Smith was held in the Allegany County Jail.
