Buffalo police tackle fleeing suspect after shots fired on West Side

A good open-field tackle helped police nab an armed man after shots were fired in the city’s West Ferry-Grant area late Monday night.

Officers responding to a call of shots fired at West Ferry and Herkimer streets at about 10:40 p.m. Monday spotted two fleeing men and tried to stop them at gunpoint. At least one fled north on Herkimer and into a nearby yard, before an officer forced him to the ground, handcuffed him and searched his pockets.

Police recovered a silver magazine and a loose bullet from the suspect’s pocket. They later found a .25-caliber handgun, three spent shotgun shells and a bag of cocaine in nearby yards and streets. Further information led to the recovery of a 12-gauge shotgun from a garage in the neighborhood.

Northwest District police charged Roberto DeJesus, 24, of Herkimer Street, with criminal weapons possession and obstructing governmental administration, according to police reports.
