ECC football starts off on the winning side

Sam Castronova (Williamsville South) passed for two touchdowns and Jonathan Royster kicked field goals from 45 and 18 yards for Erie Community College in a 20-6 season-opening win over Nassau County CC Saturday in Orchard Park.

Royster hit from 45 in the first quarter to put the Kats in front after an interception by Justin Jones. In the second quarter, a partially-blocked punt led to a 2-yard TD pass from Castronova to Stephon Hawthorne and Royster kicked his second FG after D’Andre Jenkins’ interception. Deion Johnson’s fumble recovery led to a 24-yard scoring pass from Castronova to Jametrius Lewis in the fourth.

Castronova completed 18 of 31 for 191 yards with no interceptions. Hawthorne and Vincent Gregory had six receptions each for the Kats. ECC outgained the visitors, 250-81, intercepted three passes and recovered two fumbles.
