Lowdown: Pontlitz has been an active local drag racer since 1964. During his long career he has competed mostly at Lancaster but has also traveled to compete in drag races at Norwalk, Ohio, Thompson, Ohio and Beaver Springs, Pa. He continues to compete on many occasions each season at Lancaster as well as Empire Dragway in Leicester. He now races in Nostalgia Gas competition in his 1955 Chevrolet Sedan.
Accomplishments: On July 31, Pontlitz captured his seventh win in the last 10 years in the Nostalgia Gas portion of the Sunday Nostalgia Weekend at Lancaster. The Sunday Nostalgia Weekend was known as the Sunday Niagara Weekend until two years ago. He has also won numerous drag races during his career while at Lancaster in other weekly classes. He was voted the “Best Appearing” Heavy class car at Lancaster in 2000. Pontlitz is a one-time winner of the Clutch Artists Top 50 Award (2003) and has captured the Clutch Artists Top 25 Award each of the last three seasons.
Favorite Food: “I love Buffalo-style chicken wings cooked by my wife Mary.”
Favorite Music: Enjoys 1960s music, especially the Rolling Stones.
Hobbies: Pontlitz is an Air Force veteran and chief captain of the North Tonawanda Auxiliary Police, where he volunteers his time for many community events. He also has taught advanced boating safety courses for the Swift Water Power Squadron.
