Amherst Public Library team wins 2016 Battle of the Books

A team from the Amherst Public Library took home the gold medal last weekend during the 2016 Battle of the Books teen reading competition, presented by the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library System.

Team members represented the Audubon, Clearfield, Eggertsville-Snyder and Williamsville branch libraries and included Rebecca Collins, 13, Joseph Kenney, 14, Colleen Stewart, 12, Fiona Stewart, 14, and Freda Su and Madison Wang, both 13. Head coach was Amherst Public Library Librarian Kristi Dougherty; Maureen O’Malley was her assistant.The runner-up team was from Grand Island Memorial Library.

A total of 28 teams representing 21 different local public libraries participated in the competition before about 500 family and friends at Erie Community College South. Team members entering the sixth through ninth grades spent the last several weeks practicing for challenging trivia questions about the same five preselected books before the literary battle: “NERDS: National Espionage, Rescue, and Defense Society,” by Michael Buckley; “Tesla’s Attic,” by Neal Shusterman; “The Wednesday Wars,” by Gary D. Schmidt; “Wild Magic,” by Tamora Pierce; and “Chomp,” by Carl Hiaasen.
