Second driver charged in fatal drag-racing crash

A second person has been charged in connection with a drag race in Colden that ended with the death of a passenger in one of the vehicles.

Mercedes Castillo, 18, of Holland was arraigned in Town of Colden Court on one charge of criminally negligent homicide in the death of Chauncey Kloiber, 28, of Wales.

Castillo was racing one of the vehicles on Center Street in Colden the afternoon of April 12. The other car, driven by Kody Schroeder, 19, of Holland, smashed into a pickup that was turning into a driveway at 8137 Center. Kloiber, who was in the backseat of Schroeder’s vehicle, was killed in the crash. Another passenger in Schroeder’s vehicle, Tabitha Trautwein, 19, of Holland sustained a traumatic brain injury and remains hospitalized.

Castillo pleaded not guilty. Bail was set at $5,000 cash or $25,000 bond. She is scheduled to return to court in Colden for a felony hearing on Monday at 6 p.m.

Schroeder is charged with second-degree vehicular manslaughter and vehicular assault. Schroeder, who allegedly was impaired by marijuana at the time of the crash, pleaded not guilty. Bail was set at $50,000.
