Transit Valley golfer Ben Reichert will lead a contingent of five Buffalo area golfers who made the cut to Thursday’s final 36 holes of the New York State Men’s Amateur Championship at Mohawk Golf Club in Schenectady.
Reichert birdied two of his last four holes to finish with a 1-over-par round of 72 on Wednesday and a 36-hole total of 145. That was good for a tie for 11th place, five strokes behind the leader Derek Bard of New Hartford.
Desmond Stoll of Lockport Town and Country Club, Michael Boss of Niagara Falls CC, Andy Bernatovicz of River Oaks and Jonathan Chaddock of Springville were the area golfers who made the cut to 40 plus ties.
Reichert, who started his round on the back nine, stood 1-under for his round on Wednesday after birdies at Nos. 3, 4 and 5. However, he bogeyed the sixth and seventh then parred out.
Bard, a senior at the University of Virginia, shot even par 71 for a 140 total and a one-stroke lead over Luke Feehan (Mahopac G & BC) and Tyler McArdell of Baldwinsville. McArdell had shared the first-round lead with Bard.
There were only seven rounds played under par Wednesday on the Mohawk layout. John Clare of Bellevue CC in Syracuse had the day’s best, a 4-under 67.
