With two tots trapped inside hot car, police officer smashes window with baton

A police officer broke a car window with a baton late Tuesday afternoon to rescue two children whose mother accidentally locked the door at a gas station parking lot.

The incident occurred at 5 p.m. at the corner of East Amherst and Holden streets, reported Northeast District police.

Officer Peter Nguyen used his baton to break open a window and the officers quickly removed the young children.

Officer James Hall Jr. administered first aid to one child who appeared to be faint. The temperature outside was 88 degrees at the time of the incident.

Both children were taken to Women & Children’s Hospital for observation.
