Yahoo workers aid Lockport veterans shelter

LOCKPORT – Employees of the Yahoo data and call centers in Lockport are at work this week sprucing up a shelter for troubled military veterans at 589 Walnut St., one of two operated by SERV Niagara, a not-for-profit organization.

Its founder, Jennifer O. D’Andrea-Terreri, said two teams of three to four Yahoo workers each are putting in half-days at the site all week, power-washing the siding, painting, landscaping and making repairs. New garage doors and shutters are being purchased by the company.

“We are just so grateful, I can’t even tell you,” D’Andrea-Terreri said.

SERV, which stands for Supporting, Empowering, Respecting Veterans, also is looking for new board members. Veterans or others with “an understanding of the military lifestyle” are preferred, but not required. Board members must attend a monthly meeting and put in one to three hours a week on SERV-related tasks.

Information is available at Applicants may send a letter of interest and a resume to or mail it to SERV Niagara, 80 Park Ave., 2nd Floor, Lockport, NY 14094.
