MAAC exhibit to honor Starr, Green at basketball Hall

Dr. Daniel P. Starr, athletics director at the college from 1974 to 2000, and Shauna (Geronzin) Green, the leading career scorer in the college’s women’s basketball history, will be the Canisius enshrinees for the “The MAAC Experience” exhibit at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on Oct. 15.

Each member institution of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference honors one male and one female from its basketball “family” as part of the 2016 induction class. A dinner event will be held the evening of the enshrinement at the Hall of Fame Court of Dreams in Springfield, Mass., to recognize the Honor Roll inductees.

During Starr’s tenure, Canisius athletics grew from a small, men’s-only program to a department that included 21 varsity sports with the addition of women’s varsity sports. Among the coaches hired during his reign was men’s basketball coach John Beilein, who directed Canisius to its only MAAC championship.

Green is the only player in Canisius women’s basketball history to score more than 2,000 career points and is one of the most decorated female athletes in Golden Griffins history. She was the 2002 Canisius Female Athlete of the Year. She earned an undergraduate degree in business marketing in 2002. She currently is on the women’s basketball staff at Northwestern University.
