A man was fatally stabbed in his home on Johnson Street in Lackawanna early Tuesday morning, according to Lackawanna police.
Capt. Joseph Leo, Lackawanna Police chief of detectives, said the victim, Robert Wheeler, 23, died of multiple stab wounds during the attack about 2:20 a.m. Leo declined to comment on reports that a suspect has been identified and is being sought.
The victim’s sister, identified as Amanda Wheeler, told Time Warner Cable News that she believes her brother saved her young son from being injured in the attack by a relative she described as mentally unstable.
Her mother, the son and victim were sleeping when the relative entered the room where Robert Wheeler and his nephew were sleeping, and stabbed Wheeler, Amanda Wheeler said.
Wheeler was able to make it downstairs to tell his mother who attacked him, according to the victim’s sister. Police confirm he was taken to the hospital and is in custody.
A GoFundMe account was set up for funeral expenses.
