Geico to add 600 new jobs in $15 million expansion in Amherst

Geico will add 600 new jobs and expand its Amherst operation to a second building near its existing regional facility in CrossPoint Business Park, under a new agreement with New York State and Uniland Development Co. the state and Uniland confirmed Tuesday.

The expansion includes state and local incentives.

Geico, the nation’s No. 2 auto insurer and the largest in New York State, will lease the renovated 86,000-square-foot office building at 150 CrossPoint Parkway starting in October. The new site, which was built in 2001 and has 608 parking spaces, is just down the street from the company’s Buffalo Regional Office at 300 CrossPoint, where Geico already employs 2,700 people.

The deal includes a $15 million public- and private-sector investment, including $11 million by Geico and $4 million from Empire State Development Corp.

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo will formally announce the investment and state assistance at a news conference Tuesday at the Geico offices.

“The addition of 600 new jobs is no small thing and is a major local development success story,” Cuomo said in a news release.

Geico has steadily expanded its employment base and presence in Western New York since its arrival in 2004 in temporary space with plans for more than 2,500 jobs.

It grew quickly to 300 jobs in 2005, and began leasing its 256,728-square-foot facility at CrossPoint, which Uniland built.

Geico in April acquired the property and more than 22 acres around it from Uniland for $23 million.

The insurance giant is, like The Buffalo News, owned by Berkshire Hathaway.

CrossPoint is a 127-acre corporate park located off Millersport Highway and North French Road in Amherst, with more than 25 businesses including Citigroup, Fidelis Care, M&T Bank Corp., BlackRock Inc. and Columbus McKinnon operating from various buildings with nearly 9,000 employees. Uniland, which owns the park, has spent nearly $500 million on construction and equipment to develop the park since 1999, and expects a total investment of over $1 billion by the time it’s fully developed, with about 20,000 jobs. More than 40 acres are still available for development.

Expert Global Solutions is currently at 150 CrossPoint, but will be moving to another Uniland office park in Amherst, said Uniland spokeswoman Jill Pawlik.
