Corner Bakery Cafe, a fast-casual restaurant at 1551 Niagara Falls Blvd. in Amherst, has closed.
The chain sent an e-mail blast to its mailing list Monday making the announcement. The restaurant opened about four years ago in the Burlington Plaza, across Romney Drive from Trader Joe’s.
Another location, at 7662 Transit Road in Amherst, closed a few years ago. That building is now occupied by a franchised Anchor Bar location.
The closest Corner Bakery Cafe, and the only one left in New York State, is now in Pittsford.
Fran DeSimone, the franchisee, bought the Corner Bakery Cafe franchising rights in 2011, with plans to open 15 locations in New York State. Previously, he had spent eight years working for a similar restaurant concept. DeSimone had also been in the running to secure rights to build Sonic Drive-In restaurants locally, but was unsuccessful.
Chicago-based Corner Bakery Cafe began franchising its restaurant model in 2006. It has more than 200 locations across the country.
The chain specializes in sandwiches, soups and salads and does a robust catering business, using refrigerated vans for delivery.
