Three Buffalo area golfers were within five strokes of the leaders after Tuesday’s opening round of the New York State Men’s Amateur Championship at Mohawk Golf Club in Schenectady.
Andy Bernatovicz of River Oaks leads the local contingent with 1-over-par 72. He is in a five-way tie for fifth place behind co-leaders Derek Bard and Tyler McArdell, who each shot 2-under 69. One back of Bernatovicz, in a six-way tie, are Jonathan Chaddock of Springville and Ben Reichert of Transit Valley.
Billy Gaffney of Crag Burn, who won the Buffalo District Men’s title last week, is in a tie for 27th.
The entire field will play another 18 holes Wednesday, after which there will be a cut to the low 40 and ties for Thursday’s 36-hole finale.
