SEASON FINALE – Another sign of summer slipping away comes this Tuesday evening when the Elmwood Village Association wraps up its 19th annual Picnic in the Parkway Summer Concert Series on Bidwell Parkway between Elmwood and Potomac avenues. Providing music for the last show from 7 to 9 p.m. will be the Heavenly Chillbillies. Admission is free.

STORIES AND MORE – Local children’s writer Lisa Abbott, an elementary teacher in the Williamsville schools and author of “I Dig Figs,” will be the special guest reader at the weekly EPIC Storytime at Canalside from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday. In addition to the stories for children up to age 8, there will be visit from the BlueCross BlueShield Healthy Zone Cruiser, which will provide fun and healthy activities.

UNSUNG HEROINES – The women who left their mark on Buffalo will be featured in “Leading Ladies: Women’s History by Bus,” a special Explore Buffalo tour departing at 10 a.m. Saturday from Buffalo Seminary, 205 Bidwell Parkway. The four-hour tour, including lunch, will visit the homes and workplaces of community leaders, authors, actresses and artists.

STEPPING OUT – The hamlet of Rushford in Allegany County holds a Grand Parade every Labor Day, and it’s inviting marching bands, fire companies, veterans organizations, community groups, antique car clubs, political candidates and horse enthusiasts to take part. Theme of the parade is “Traveling Through Time.” Especially welcome are musical groups and music on floats.

Trophies and cash prizes will be awarded in six categories. Registration and lineup begin at 9 a.m. on Sept. 5 at Rushford Elementary School on School Street. For info, call parade coordinator Peggy Armstrong at (585) 808-3337.

GREEN WORLD – The docent training class of 2016 is forming at the Buffalo & Erie County Botanical Gardens. The six-week sessions will begin right after Labor Day and can be attended from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursdays or Saturdays. The Thursday classes will focus on hands-on field trips and tours, while Saturday instruction will be for those more interested in informal programs.
